View of Taos Square from a balcony |
|
Sunday was a day trip to Taos. Before leaving Santa Fe, we had breakfast at the Tune-up Café. After breakfast, we headed north out of Santa Fe on route 285 to Española where we picked up route 68. Route 68 followed the Rio Grande River through the Rio Grande Gorge. It was good scenery. About 20 miles south of Taos, the road climbed out of the gorge and up onto a broad, high desert plateau. You could see forever.
We spent a couple hours wandering through Taos on foot to see what we could see. There were a lot of galleries, shops, restaurants, etc. I've got to admit, I didn't like their town square. Too cluttered. Plus, it didn't have the standard statue or fountain in the middle.
After a drink at a bar overlooking the square, we drove north out of town a couple miles to
Taos Pueblo, a World Heritage site and the only
living World Heritage site. Some of the Native American residents sold their arts and crafts to visitors.
As we were leaving Taos, we stopped for a late lunch at Five Star Burger.
